| 内容記述 | “My Father” was published in 1963, while Doris Lessing was becoming well-known as the best feminist writer of The Golden Notebook at the rise of early 1960s feminist movements in the world. She had not written any essays about her own family life until then. Short as it is, it is a curiously interesting essay on her stricken father and her own early life in South Africa; it reveals the creation of a woman novelist who is deeply concerned with the long history of the British rule in the marginal colony. After going to the battle front of World War I as an idealistic officer and coming back without one leg, the father immigrated to colonies such as Persia and South Africa. In Africa he led a poorer life as a landowner and suffers various illnesses until death, involving his wife and children in a series of financial troubles and illnesses. It is natural that the reader imagines such a family life gloomy and miserable. To our surprise, however, Lessing never complains of his utter mismanagement of the farm, but depicts him as a deluded, lovable and struggling victim of the World War I and the British imperial politics of those days. His deeply rooted racial prejudice and ardent nationalism is so strikingly parallel with the natural beauty and great potentialities of the unknown Africa that the essay can be read as a kind of amazing epic story. The aim of translating “My Father” into Japanese is that Lessing the woman and the pacifist as opposed to the communist feminist should be more widely known in Japan. | |||||
