内容記述 | Almost all Japanese universities require students to complete some English courses before graduation. However, most non-English major students do not have urgent needs to acquire English, so it is difficult to maintain their motivations in these required English courses. This paper aims to reveal non-English major students’ needs, purposes and attitudes for taking English courses so that we can better meet their needs and determine what should be done to make their English study more durable and potentially more enjoyable. A questionnaire was conducted in the first-year students’ classes in the fall semester 2019 at Edogawa university and 354 responses were collected. The results show that the students understand the importance of English and have an intention to study but have not started yet because they do not know how. For this reason, many of them feel that they need to reinforce their fundamental English knowledge, especially grammar and vocabulary. Different from the previous studies by other researchers, which revealed students’ interests in English conversation, the students at Edogawa university want to improve their reading skills and they prefer traditional teaching methods rather than relatively new ones. This may stem from their fear of new challenges and lack of confidence. Based on these results, it is concluded that we need to teach students fundamental English knowledge and learning strategies. Simultaneously, we also need to provide affective support for them. |
